After three straight top-five finishes, the K-State men's golf team is in Trinity, Texas, to compete in the Big 12 Championship. The four-round tournament, taking place at the Whispering Pines Golf Club, begins today at 8:50 a.m. and concludes Sunday.
The 12-team field is highlighted by national powerhouses Oklahoma State and Texas A&M. Both teams are ranked in the top 20 by Golfstat.com, with the Cowboys, who won the tournament last season, coming in at No. 5 and the Aggies at No. 17. Other notable teams include No. 27 Texas Tech and No. 38 Texas.
The Wildcat lineup is headlined by sophomores Mitchell Gregson and Joe Ida. While Gregson is coming off a career-best third-place finish at the Missouri Tiger Intercollegiate on April 8, Ida struggled his last time out, finishing in a tie for 25th place. The duo has combined for 7 top-five finishes this season.
Freshmen Daniel Wood and Kyle Smell, both coming off top-10 finishes, occupy the third and fourth spots in the lineup. Smell is making his second-consecutive appearance and Wood is making his sixth. Including appearances as an individual unaffiliated with the team, Wood has competed in every tournament this spring. Junior Robert Streb, K-State's third leading scorer this season, also will compete for the Wildcats. Despite struggling in his last action, Streb has had a strong season, including two top-five finishes.
The 2007-08 campaign has been one of the best ever for K-State. Under coach Tim Norris, now in his 11th season at K-State, the Wildcats have finished in the top-10 in all but one tournament. That span also includes eight top-five finishes, tying a school record set during the 2003-04 season.
With a scoring average of 293.36 strokes through their first 11 events, the team is also on pace to break the scoring record, also set by the 2003-04 squad, which averaged 294.73 strokes. This is the Wildcats' final regular season action.
