The K-State women's golf team looks to build on its momentum as team members travel south for the Big 12 Championship in Stillwater, Okla., beginning today and ending Sunday.
The Wildcats capped off their regular season April 7-8, at the Canes and Cardinal Classic in Miami, Fla., with a 10th-place finish, marking their best finish of the spring season.
The 38-over par 902 at the Canes and Cardinal Classic also marked the second best score the Wildcats have posted in the spring and fall seasons combined and was the best-scoring finish in a 54-hole tournament this season.
Coach Kristi Knight said her team is focused and ready to get back out on the course after a couple of weeks off.
"They are looking forward to the challenge," she said. "They have practiced well the last couple of weeks, and they are ready to go. They have a mindset of going out and playing well the next few days."
The Wildcats will face a tough field, with eight of the 12 teams from the conference ranking in golfweek.com's top 50.
The 3-day, 54-hole tournament will be played at Karsten Creek Golf Course.
Knight said her team will be in for a challenge, partly because of the participating teams but also because of the difficulty of the course.
"This is a tough golf course, but a very fair golf course as well," she said. "It rewards good shots and penalizes bad shots."
Knight said one of the keys for her team's potential success this weekend is patience.
"This course penalizes impatience," she said. "We need to be successful on the green. We need to make a lot of pars. Par is a great score on this golf course. There are several places where you have to go out there and not force things and just take a bogey and move on."
Oklahoma State will be the host university of the tournament.
OSU has won more championships (five), than any other university in the 12-year existence of the Big 12 Conference.
The Wildcats' highest finish in the Big 12 Conference Championship occurred in both the 2002 and 2003 seasons when they finished in 6th place.
This year's Wildcats will be led by seniors Michelle Regan and Kali Quick, who have also led the team in scoring this year with a 76.96 average.
The pair has nine top-20 finishes this season between them, including five top-5 appearances and one individual victory.
"If we do everything that we are capable of, then we have a chance to go out there and have a very nice tournament," Knight said.
