A Fort Riley soldier died from an explosion Thursday in Baghdad.
Capt. Michael A. Norman, 36, died of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device Jan. 31 in Baghdad, according to the Department of Defense.
Originally from Killeen, Texas, Norman was a military intelligence officer. He served on a transition team assigned to the 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, where he helped prepare small teams of American soldiers to teach and mentor their Afghan counterparts.
Norman entered the Army in February 1992 and deployed in August 2007. This was his first deployment in support of the Global War on Terrorism.
To date, 143 Fort Riley soldiers and airmen have been killed while serving in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
As of Saturday, at least 3,943 members of the U.S. military had died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.
