Women’s basketball team holds off Horned Frogs, claim 57-54 victory

A trip to Waco was just what the K-State women’s basketball team needed to get back on track, defeating TCU (7-10, 0-6 Big 12 Conference) 57-54 on Saturday to end a three-game losing streak.

Leading the Wildcats (11-7, 2-4 Big 12) was senior guard Brittany Chambers, who dominated the game with 24 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

It was a back and forth affair throughout, with both teams going on scoring runs. K-State started the game off with a 14-6 lead. TCU responded with a run of their own to cut the deficit to two, and the rest of the half saw both teams trade baskets with the Wildcats taking a 29-27 lead into the half.

With just under eight minutes to go in the game the Wildcats seemed to be in control with a 48-40 lead, but the Horned Frogs showed that they were hungry for their first conference win.

TCU freshman guard Zahna Medley scored 5 points, of her team-high 21, in a 9-0 run that saw TCU take their first lead of the game at 49-48.

Three free throws by Chambers and a basket by sophomore guard Ashia Woods gave the Wildcats the lead that they would not relinquish en route to the victory.

Joining Chambers in double figures was fellow senior guard Mariah White, who scored 11 points, along with six rebounds and five steals.

K-State returns to Bramlage Coliseum on Jan. 23 to face Oklahoma State at 7 p.m. Wednesday’s game will feature a ’70s Night promotion with the first 300 students receiving a ’70s K-State T-shirt.
