The Community Pride Committee and the Lions Club of Chapman, Kan., are sponsoring the Tornado Relief 5K Run and Walk during the Chapman Labor Day 2008 celebration.
The race will raise funds to help Chapman recover from a tornado that destroyed most of the town on June 11, the same night an EF-4 tornado ripped through Manhattan.
The 5K run begins at 8 a.m. on Monday at the Chapman High School football field and parking lot, said Aaron Rickley, the race director and a 2001 K-State graduate. The walk starts at 9 a.m.
Rickley said there will be a tent set up with a registration stand at 7 a.m. for anyone who would like to participate. Registration for the run is $30 and $10 for the walk.
T-shirts will be available for the run participants while supplies last. Walk participants may also purchase a T-shirt for an additional $10.
Sports drinks and water will be available at the start/finish line and along the route for the participants. Granola bars and fruit will be available for the participants as well, Rickley said.
Olympic-style medals will be given for first, second and third place in each category.
The overall men's and overall women's first place winners will each receive a $25 gift certificate from Manhattan Running Company in addition to the medals.
Other events on Monday include a car exhibition, a parade and a concert. For more information on the race go to www.chapmantornadorelief5k.com.
