Spani signs with Vols, Martin looks at another '09 recruit

The battle for women's basketball star Taber Spani is over — Pat Summitt has won another big recruiting battle. Spani, a 6-foot-1 guard, has committed to the University of Tennessee, according to govolsxtra.com. K-State was believed to have had a strong chance at Spani because of her family's connections to the university, but it wasn't enough to lure her away from the defending national champions. Spani's father, Gary, played football at K-State and was a consensus All-American. Her sister, Shalin, is currently a sophomore on the K-State women's basketball team. The scouting report on Spani best compares to former K-State great Kendra Wecker. Men's and women's basketball recruiting update

Men’s basketball news: Coach Frank Martin announced Friday that junior Chris Merriewether 
would be put on a basketball scholarship for the 2008-09 season. 
Merriewether, who was valedictorian of his high school, has been on a 
partial academic scholarship in his first two years. Speaking of Merriewether, it appears the Wildcat coaching staff has
 accomplished a similar feat in landing 6-foot-6, 225-pound forward
 Victor Ojeleye. Ojeleye, a native of Ottawa, Kan., was also 
valedictorian of his class coming out of Ottawa High School. In his
 senior year at Ottawa, Ojeleye averaged 26.5 points and 12.1 rebounds.
Upon graduating from high school, he attended The Patterson School in
 Lenoir, N.C., the same school that current Wildcats Dominique Sutton
