Coaching search update...

11/23/08 8:10 PM

I haven't said much on the K-State coaching search as of yet. I have been sitting back and waiting. It has been a roller coaster ride and I thought I saw it coming to an end tonight or tomorrow, but that doesn't appear to be happening from what I am hearing. After spending 90 minutes standing outside of the Vanier Football Complex with some other media members, I concluded that the coaching search has not stopped. Sports information director Kenny Lannou arrived at approximately 6 p.m. and told us absolutely nothing was going on at the meeting. Everyone still stuck around as players slowly kept arriving for the 6:30 meeting. Athletic director Bob Krause arrived at 6:20 and walked in. The meeting was over by by 6:45 and the players and Krause all exited and said nothing. Except for...

Iowa State Preview

11/20/08 12:56 PM

Well, for once K-State is favored to win. Vegas has set the line at 9.5 for the Wildcats.     This game may seem meaningless to the K-State fans, but it definitely means something to these players. Well, at least some of them.     Talking to Ian Campbell the other day, I could hear it in his voice. K-State means something to him, and going out with a win is something he puts as a high priority.     In watching some of Iowa State earlier in the year,  I can tell you the Wildcats may have some struggles defensively just like they have against everybody else in the Big 12 Conference.     The Cyclones (2-9, 0-7) aren't as bad as their record indicates. They had KU beat earlier this year but failed to close...

The Day After: Nebraska

11/16/08 9:38 PM

I don’t want to brag at K-State’s expense but my prediction was pretty close. I said Nebraska would dominate the time of possession. It did just that as it held onto the ball for nearly 37 minutes.             I said it would use its power running game to run through the K-State defense. It did. And my prediction of 45-28 wasn’t too far off, but what was I thinking? K-State holding an opponent to less than 50 points? That hasn’t happened a lot this season as Nebraska became the fourth team to score 50 points or more against K-State, a school-record for... 2 comments

K-State announces top-25 recruiting class

11/13/08 5:16 PM

It's an exciting time to be a basketball fan for both the men's and women's teams, but particularly the men. And sure, part of that has to do with the decline of the football program, but don't worry, that season is almost over.     I have a feeling that this year will be a fun season, but what is in store for next year could be far greater.     Today, the Wildcats received four binding national letters of intent from four high school players in what rates as a consensus top-25 class nationally.     Consider the 2009-2010 roster after today's signings. After examining the ratings of each player by national scouting sites, it could arguably be the most talented team K-State has ever fielded. I know teams back in the day were great, but it's... 1 comment

Nebraska preview

11/12/08 3:42 PM

This is a game before the season that I thought K-State could win. But now it is hard to find a K-State fan that thinks this game can be had by K-State.     Nebraska isn't one of those finesse teams that spreads you out. Those teams are tough enough to defend. But believe it or not, K-State is in better shape to defend those teams than the Cornhuskers.     The Huskers are one of those teams that will line up and play smash-mouth football. They have a trio of running backs in Roy Helu Jr., Marlon Lucky and Quentin Castille that can carry the load and start for a lot of teams, especially K-State.     The Cornhusker offensive line can physically demoralize a defense. I expect Nebraska to do just that -- line up and run between... 0 comment

The day after: Missouri

11/12/08 3:38 PM

K-State seemed to play a more inspired game Saturday night against Missouri, but it still wasn't even close to enough. That tells you how far away this team is right now.     The Wildcats hit harder and tackled better on the defensive side of the ball. But something was missing.     The offense failed to show up once again. It's becoming far too much of a trend. Quarterback Josh Freeman hasn't been the same quarterback ever since Big 12 play started.     Consider that he only turned the ball over four total times in the first four games of the season. In the last three games, Freeman has turned the ball over nine times, including six interceptions and three fumbles.     He has consistently missed open...

Tune into cable channel 8 tonight

11/5/08 3:10 PM

K-State fans, don’t forget to tune into K-State TV (cable channel 8) for the K-State volleyball match against the Oklahoma Sooners at 7 p.m.     It is will be available to Cox Communications subscribers and on campus on channel 8. It will also be available on broadcast television KKSU-LP Channel 21 in the Manhattan area.     This is the first non-intramural sports presentation by the channel. Brian Smoller will have the call as he handles play-by-play duties with Rob Voelker on color commentary.     The game will also be available at kstatesports.com for Powercat Passport subscribers in multi-camera format, which should enhance the production value for online viewers.     These folks do a great job and... 0 comment

The day after: KU

11/2/08 8:20 PM

The K-State players said they centered their entire offseason on KU. The game was on the countdown clock the whole summer while the Wildcats worked out.     They felt they were as prepared as ever. So prepared, that Deon Murphy felt he could talk a little trash leading up to the game. He didn’t back it up, and neither did his teammates.     But let me ask you this: If the coaches and players focused their entire offseason campaign around KU, then wouldn’t you expect it to be a competitive and good game at the least?     That’s the biggest issue for many Wildcat fans. K-State was blown out, and it was never a game. K-State was overmatched at every position on the field and in every aspect.... 2 comments
