EDBOARD: Reduce holiday energy

As the American public demands more energy efficiency, holidays have become the next part of the American dream to go green. This holiday season, will show how far the country has come in  achieving energy conservation.
The aspect of Christmas that can change energy consumption is lights. A house lit with multicolored lights and yard displays can be beautiful but also increase the energy used.
To have a green Christmas, no one has to eliminate the lights, but perhaps reducing the time the lights are on could curb skyrocketing energy prices.
Of course, it might sound strange that a holiday for which people cut down trees could be considered environmentally friendly, but buying a real Christmas tree can have a positive influence.
Since these trees are natural, they are biodegradable. When someone disposes of their tree, it will help grow other trees, further reducing the holiday's environmental footprint.
Besides observing a religious holiday and celebrating one's family and friends, this holiday season could be one in which we celebrate smarter energy use and conservation. If more Americans decide to do just a little bit, the effect can be massive.
