"I always wondered why they were called 'roofies', cause you're more likely to end up on the floor than the roof. They should call them 'floories'," Doug said.
    "Or rapies," Alan added.

This infamous quote from movie, "The Hangover" may have helped the two characters find their friend and groom-to-be, but roofies are, in reality, anything but laughable.

Rohypnol

Roofies are derived from the drug Rohypnol. It, if used for its correct purpose, treats severe sleeping disorders and has been allowed by the Drug Enforcement Administration since 1995. Some rapists and sexual assaulters, however, put Rohypnol into drinks to hinder victims from fighting back.  When Rohypnol is used in a rape, it is called a "roofie."

Bill Arck, director of alcohol and other drug education service, said drug manufactures are taking steps to make it more difficult to use the drug improperly.

"Makers of Rohypnol changed the formula so when mixed with CMS depressants (alcohol), clear drinks turn blue, beer turns green and dark drinks turn murky," he said. "They also have the tablet dissolving slowly."

Now possible victims may be more apt to notice the difference before they take a drink. If they do take a drink though, they could know immediately something is wrong.

Arck said the effects of roofies are generally significant enough that a person would know they were not alcohol-related, especially if the person was sober and not on any other prescription or recreational drugs at the time.

The drug can sedate a person in 20 minutes, the effects usually last eight and 12 hours, but depending on what is in a person's system already (i.e. food, alcohol), it may last even longer.

GHB (street names: Liquid E, Liquid X and Woman's Viagra)

GHB (gamma hydroxybutyric acid) is a clear liquid that can easily be confused with water at first glance, especially if it is stored in a water bottle or similar receptacle. The body naturally produces small amounts of the chemical to help metabolism, but ingesting any more than that leads to effects similar to being high on ecstasy (hence its nickname "Liquid E").

A Sept. 18, 2005, Kansas City Star article about GHB said the drug is utilized more and more frequently in bars. Since 1995, there have been 198 GHB-related fatalities, most in the U.S., according to findings from a GHB research project headed by Deborah Zvosec, a Minnesota-based researcher.

"It's still a big issue, and law enforcement and hospitals are way behind," said Trinka Porrata, a retired Los Angeles police officer who heads Project GHB, a group that tries to raise awareness about drugs.

Ketamine (Special K, Ket or Vitamin K)

Ketamine (ketamine hydrochloride) has the same effects on the body as Rohypnol.

Ketamine is approved for commercial use as a veterinary product in cats and monkeys for short-duration surgery or immobilization. It is also used in human medicine as an anesthetic for children for whom vomiting is not an issue. Ketamine was used for battlefield injuries in the Vietnam War and other wars for rapid induction. It has been used for repeated procedures like radiation therapy and changing of burn dressings in which analgesia (pain reduction) is desired but deep anesthesia is not required. This drug lasts only 30 to 60 minutes.

Benadryl(Diehenhydramine)

Even less obvious drugs like Benadryl are playing a role in rapes and sexual assaults.

"It is not easily detected," Herrera said. "They just overdose their victims on that instead of roofies."

Benadryl, an antihistamine with drying and sedative effects is used to help with allergies.  It is also used to treat allergic reactions to blood transfusions, to prevent and treat motion sickness and, with other drugs, to treat anaphylactic shock (severe allergic reaction) and Parkinson's disease. Since the side effects ultimately result in a lifeless body, some rapists and sexual assaulters prefer the drug to eliminate victims' resistance.

Signs of Ingestion

According to the K-State Women's Center, the physical effects of Rohypnol can be similar to being highly intoxicated, for example, the victim could have nausea, vision problems, slurred speech, dizziness and, if taken under the right conditions, convulsions or blackouts.

The effects of Ketamine and GHB are similar and can also include aggressive behavior or breathing problems. In extreme cases, a person can go into a coma or even die.

Mental effects include dreamlike feelings, confusion, hallucinations, lost sense of time and identity, of distorted perception of
sight and sound, feeling out of control, out-of-body experiences, coma, numbness, and partial or complete amnesia.

Since most victims do not know the symptoms of being drugged, many believe it is hard to tell the difference between them and being drunk. Therefore, the instances go unnoticed. By the time people report rapes or assaults; the roofies are out of their system and are not detected.

Tammy Herrera, registered nurse and sexual assault nurse examiner at Mercy Regional Health Center, said, "It is hard to say the difference between being drugged and being drunk," Herrera said, "We do not test for drugs because usually they are out of the system too fast. We take a blood sample from the victim and send it to KBA [Kansas Bioscience Authority] with the sexual assault kit. Sometimes they come back positive."

Sadly there are a lot more options out there as well. I have sleeping disorders and actually do dose myself with things that are not listed, and honestly are easier to get, expecially for those in veterinary medicine. I'm not familiar with illicit drugs in any way, but I assume there are the street equivlants. Personally, I feel the strongest defense against sexual predetors, expecially for women is being able to go out with a trusted friend. I understand that date rape is ever heard of anymore, but any girl or boy can't always tell the difference between lust and love, and the friend doesn't have to be of the opposite sex. Wing man, wing girl, whatever, if you have to potty, don't go at the same time, and worry more about your friend's drink than that cute "other" next to you. To all the guys, one night stands are fun, I've had a few myself, but you don't get anything out of it other than wondering "did she have anything?". For girls, one night stands, also not gratifying, and they're one night stands. If you find out it's date rape, report it, because you know (I'm a counsolor), and if it's vengance with a history it won't fly in court (also from a coulsolor).

This is a sad thing that sexual predators are using various drugs including anesthesia drugs to sedate their victims. The drug use is already their in India at various places and specialy higher society. Though it looks glitering to the outside world but it is actual hale. With gradual degradation of morality in society and drug use become rampant more and more victims are falling prey of these predators. There is urgent need of arrest of gegradation of societal values of Indian society before it goes out of control. Government must push through stringent laws to stop the use of above drugs except in medical set up

I think this is an excellent article and both women and men need to be informed of the terrible things that can and have been happening in Manhattan. I had a very close friend of mine was potentially drugged while at work. When she called scared to death and not knowing where she was It broke my heart and I knew something was wrong and eventually found where she was. When I found her she had obviously been messed with so I took her to the emergency room. While there the doctor on hand was extremely unprofessional and disrespectful to both her and I. She acted as if this was just another drunk blonde that had too much to drink. If it not were for my persistence and threat of calling a lawyer she wouldn't have run either the rape test or had tested for potential drug metabolites! I myself had to inform the police of potential assault. Long story short the tests came back inconclusive as a portion of the drug test was lost which she and I found out nearly 8 months after the fact!! I still can't believe to this day how poorly we were treated at the hospital and how unprofessionally we were treated by Detective Schwartz at the local Police department!!! I hope no one else has to go through this! It sucks wondering what happened and why!!

Empty the jails of marijuana smokers and start locking up date-rapers for life... or perhaps the solution is vigilante justice? I keep an eye out for dudes trying to date rape and I have yet to catch one. If I did I would stomp his balls.

I agree with Anonymous. Although I believe it is important to educate people and make them aware
of the danger, I believe it can be done without giving detailed instructions on the types and usages of
those drugs. It seems to me the article could have been put to better use if more information had been
given on how to tell if you had been slipped a date rape drug, or how to protect yourself from date rape
drugs. Such as never accepting a drink from someone you don't know, or never leaving your drink unattended.
Yes one could probably obtain the information from "google" or elsewhere but you wouldn't post the ingredients
to make a pipe bomb and then say the public should be informed and call it "Responsible Journalism".

I find it highly offensive that the Collegian would assume that MEN use the date rape drugs on WOMEN. That is blatantly sexist. I myself was date raped by a large woman at a party once. She waited until I was inebriated, I had very little to drink that night so I do not know why I was so intoxicated (maybe she slipped something in my drink). I went outside to urinate and when I tried to come back in she blocked the door and did not allow me to go back inside until I kissed her. I was not going to get physical and move her because I am not that kind of guy. I said NO repeatedly but she would not budge. Eventually I kissed her for about a minute, which made me feel dirty and mentally weak. She then wanted me to come to her room for the night, but again I refused. I was then lambasted by her friends for not wanting to go up to her room. It was very embarrassing and I felt like a sex object rather than a man. To this day I get uncomfortable when a large woman is making advances at me as it reminds me of my incident. More men should be aware of the possibility of date rape. It makes me so mad and sad that people dismiss male date rape because girls are perceived as weaker and unable to force a guy to do anything physically. Or that men are assumed to be up and willing for any girl that comes onto them. The reverse sexism in this world is by far more unnoticed and unaddressed than normal sexism. It is an issue I try and push out there and I am very passionate about.

This is good for educating people. Some young people new to college may have no idea about this kind of stuff. Never accept an open drink at a party or bar unless you see it prepared personally.

Yes, I also disagree with Anonymous. If people want to use date rape drugs on women, they would already know how to get it and what to use. A person can google that and find all the info they need. Publishing this article is not going to convince someone to start using date rape drugs. If anything, hopefully it will hinder people using them now that more women know what signs to lookout for.

I disagree with anonymous. Sheltering people from what goes on in the world is only going to make them more likely victims.

Also, I feel it's important to note that THE MOST WIDELY USED DATE RAPE DRUG IS ALCOHOL.

very well informative. it is best to know what to look for then to be blinded by societys hidden facts. as long as you touch one person with your information then you know you have accomplished something positive even if people do not like the facts out there for all to see. but in todays world its better to be safe and not sorry. wonderful job here. thank you for your knowlege.

I disagree with the comment above regarding the education of the would-be abusers. I believe education can work as great prevention and have a difficult time believing that the dangers of telling the bad guys about ways to use these drugs outweighs the benefits of educating the possible victims. Responsible journalism--I hope many take heed.

To the Collegian,
Although I feel that letting people know about signs of ingestion of these drugs is important, I know that publishing this article was a HUGE mistake! Not only do women of this campus live in fear as it is already due to these drugs, you have just informed even more of this campus's predators of EVEN MORE possiblities to drug their victims. Before publishing this article it might have been smart to consider that telling people that these drugs are easily accessible would actually now cause an increase in this campus's number of victims! As per the comment of above my point is already proven. Not only were the women of this campus in fear before, but now it will be that much worse thanks to the publishing of the content in this article. I think you very thoughtless in informing even more predators of how easy it will be to drug their victims.
