An event planned on a whim brought big results for one K-State student Wednesday.

One night in March, Matt Pennell, freshman in secondary education, decided to set up a Tax Day Tea Party protesting excessive government spending, and a month later, several hundred protesters gathered at the Riley County Courthouse with him.

"I just decided one night to do it and posted it on taxdayteaparty.com, and it just went from there," Pennell said. "The night I decided to do this, I thought that 40 people would be a success."

Instead, between 300 and 400 people arrived Wednesday afternoon to listen to speeches, hold protest signs and throw tea bags into a stock tank labeled "Boston Harbor." Kansas Rep. Richard Carlson, R-St. Marys, and Dick Miller, the 2008 Republican candidate for District 67, which includes Riley County, spoke to the crowd.

"We had people from western Kansas, all the way from Hays, to people from the far northeast corner of Kansas," Miller said.

Each of the organizers emphasized the grassroots nature of the event. There was no sponsoring organization, the planning was low-key and information was spread mostly over the Internet and word of mouth.

"I know Dick [Miller] and worked with him on the election; he saw the announcement on the Web site and called me about it," Pennell said.

Local residents protested a myriad of recent actions by the federal government, bringing signs, flags and props to make their point.

"I want to send a message to Washington: No more, stop the pork," said Ron Stupfer, a Manhattan resident who had a large stuffed pig strapped on his shoulder.

Pennell said he is planning more events for the future, as well as setting up a Wordpress blog. Though there is no set schedule, he said he hopes to have another event in June and another on Independence Day.

For those who think the tea parties were a Republican-only event are sadly mistaken. Senator Chris Steinegar, a Democrat, showed up at the tea party in Overland Park. I was at that one. There probably was about 3,000+ there. I'm ashamed to have Dennis Moore as my representative. He voted all three times for TARP (part one and part two), and the "stimulus" spending fiasco...

Why are leftards incapable of thinking in principles? Regardless of which half of the One Party system is racking up massive deficits, they are a serious menace to the future of all Americans. So instead of trying to score your little partisan points (you think), try educating yourself about basic economics and the principles the nation was founded upon and made its greatness possible.

Obama might be spending more than Bush did but if it were not for Bush starting the huge hole (deficit), Obama would not be in this situation. Besides, I don't recall seeing all these patriotic protesters protesting when Bush was rackin up the biggest deficit in U.S. history. Where were all of you then?

Dear Your Name,
A democratic congress is what got us into this mess, not Bush.

If you are 20 and voted for Obama, you have just voted for 114,000+ debt of taxes.

Obama's budget will exceed the last 8 years debt in 3 years.

Check it out taxteaparty.com

Lets stick to the facts people

The leftard who posted below just can't understand a protest where American flags are being waved instead of burned. I guess dissent on Obama's huge increase to the national debt is not patriotic. For the left patriotism means blindly following their Messiah.

Oh wow, Republicans protesting excessive spending? How ironic. Anyone who thinks George Bush was a "classy guy" can suck it. HE got us into this mess, NOT Obama - Obama is just trying to clean up all the economic carnage that BUSH caused. Just shut up already; shut up.
