Marijuana should be legalized, taxed like alcohol

With the growing despair of this recession, California put forth an initiative to legalize and tax recreational marijuana in late February. While this initiative will surely not pass, it demonstrates that legalizing marijuana is not far-fetched and proves to be a very lucrative move for the state's income. The national legalization of marijuana for medical and recreational use is past due.

By Friday, the War on Drugs has cost taxpayers more than $11 billion, according to drugsense.org. In an economy where every penny counts, I suggest we divert the money being allocated to arresting citizens for possession of small amounts of marijuana to increasing teachers' salaries. Not only do we pay enormous amounts of money to support the multi-decade War on Drugs, but we also pay to house those who are detained because of minor marijuana-related charges.

Since the prohibition of marijuana has proven to be extremely ineffective, the government should take the opportunity to capitalize on America's fascination with marijuana rather than spend more taxpayer dollars fighting the losing battle. A study called "The Budgetary Implications of Marijuana Prohibition" was conducted by more than 530 distinguished economists. Their results prompted them to sign an open letter to President Bush stating they believed marijuana should be "legal, but taxed and regulated like other goods."

A June 2005 report by Dr. Jeffrey Miron, a visiting professor of economics at Harvard University, showed that replacing marijuana prohibition with a system of taxation and regulation similar to that used for alcohol would produce combined savings and tax revenues of between $10 billion and $14 billion per year, effectively paying off what has been spent on the War on Drugs and even producing a profit.

Prescription drug abuse has risen drastically, and ending the prohibition of marijuana offers citizens a much safer alternative to putting such dangerous controlled substances in their bodies. In December 2008, UPI.com reported that more than 7 million people in the U.S. are abusing prescription drugs. The Kansas City Star examined Kansas-specific statistics and found that shipments of hydrocodone, the active ingredient in Vicodin, have increased 300 percent since 2000 and Oxycodone increased 260 percent in the state.

Often the statements against the legalization of marijuana claim that it is a dangerous gateway drug that affects short term memory, inhibitions and the ability to operate a motor vehicle. The main difference between alcohol and marijuana is social acceptance. Of course, if marijuana were legalized, I believe the same rules should apply to smokers that apply to people who drink alcohol. This particular exception should not be confused with the necessity to keep hard-core narcotics, opiates and other such drugs illegal.

Those with addictive personalities will find a way to use and abuse any drug they prefer. To the responsible marijuana users of society, there should be a legal way to smoke the plant of their choice. It is far less toxic than tobacco and leads to far less dangerous actions than alcohol. To top it off, this move could boost the economy with more than $10 billion dollars a year in tax revenue. America needs to think financially and stop being so uptight about a green plant.

“Scientist Man” , you are the true definition of a IGNORANT BIGGET. You were obviously a dork in high school, college (That is if you went to college...probably not by the way you write) and now one in your excuse of adulthood. You may ask why I am attacking your person and not the topic and that is because you have offended me as well as all the other coinsurers of the plant out there. The subject of legalization is not a matter of why but when...you can complain and point fingers all you want but rest assure that one day the legalization is coming as well as the tax benefits. The law of attrition will then take hold and the nation will then depend on the tax income. I ask this to everyone.....Why are the moral less drug dealers of the world being aloud to keep the income earned (risk premium in financial terms) and not pay a tax UNLESS they are busted. Need I remind you all that the prohibition of alcohol was ratified because of lost tax revenue and the skyrocket in black market crime...(how the heck do you think the Kennedy family amassed the beginning of it's fortune….the were black market swine). We need to ratify this and get the tax income on the books so we can start putting rapists and murder’s in jail for their full terms not this “25-to life” and get out on parole in 7 with good behavior.

I am a college student and I don't go around the streets to kill people or rob a store to get weed. If someone has weed great but if they don't then its no big deal im not gonna die from not having it, hence dangerous drugs like heroin and meth and crap like that where you have withdraw symptoms and you need the stuff. The after effects of marijuana are far less than tobacco and alcohol. 1. too much nicotine in your body will kill you 2. too much alcohol in your body will kill you 3, too much marijuana will NOT kill you. If you just look at those facts right there you will find out that the most dangerous drugs we have legal right now are Tobacco and Alcohol. They both pose serious threats to our society and to ourselves but then again we legalize based on the sole fact that there are too many people smoking cigarettes and drinking. Marijuana makes people afraid because they think it will cause damage to them or will make them "stupid". I have been smoking 2-3 years off and on when I choose and I can still ace tests the same before I started smoking weed.

Scientist man, YOU ARE NO SCIENTIST! Marijuana does not incite aggression and it is not addicting. People who use it don't beat people up for money to buy it because they don't HAVE TO HAVE IT, they just like it as an alternative way to relax after a hard day at work. YES WORK! There are many otherwise law abiding, professional, intelligent, ethical and moral people who smoke pot and the only way that it can create havoc in your life is if and when you get arrested for it. You might be surprised at the people who indulge in that simple, innocent home grown herb. I am 51 year old female who along with my husband of 33 years raised three college educated sons who are productive members of society and we all have great relationships with each other. Your perception of the kind of people who smoke is so warped that I had to debate whether to dignify your comments with a reply, but since so many people out there are "under the influence" that alcohol is so benign and pot is a gateway, evil drug, you all are in dire need of an education. Personally, I happen to be intolerant to alchohol, but since alcoholism runs in my family that's probably a good thing. If I were to divulge my personal history of tremendous family tragedy to you, you might well understand why I have no desire to go through life totally sober, but by the same token resent the hell out of being made a criminal just because I smoke to get my high and others choose to drink theirs. Why don't you look up some facts before you puke your ignorant drivel all over your keyboard. By the way, I could probably buy and sell you 10 times over from many, many years of hard work and sacrifice and now I live in beautiful Hilton Head. I'm not the exception either because I know many others just like us who for one reason or another cannot come forward because they have jobs to protect. I only hope that I live to see the day when arguments like this are no longer necessary.

to AR: my comment to Chris C was only that people have died from marijuana, a point that he discounts. By no means did I insinuate that legal pharmacutical or food items that people are commonly allergic to need to be banned or otherwise made illegal. However, until drug laws are changed this is how it is.
And, to my original point....Yes, people have died with the direct cause being marijuana. That was my ONLY point.
You need to lighten up, rethink YOUR logic, and learn how to stay on point when 'arguing'.

Just legalize it

I'm allergic to penicillin -- should that be illegal too? What about people who are allergic to milk? Your argument holds no weight; learn better logic.

Also, I think Scientist Man was being sarcastic. I find it hard to believe that anyone would seriously believe people who smoke marijuana go on rampages and beat up "old ladies" to get their fix.

Haven't you guys read the news lately? The federal government is going to stop arresting people who have medical marijuana clinics in states that have laws that allow the distribution. That's a step.

to Chris C...People have died from pot...I almost did! I found out the hard way that I am allergic to pot!! I'm not the only one as the hospital I ended up in (on the west coast) had seen other deaths attributed to allergic reactions to pot. The reason there are no "statistics" to back this up is that the cause of death is listed as allergic reaction or anaphylitic shock. Dont fool yourself, it can and does happen.
