The K-State men's basketball team opened the 2008-09 season with a win against Washburn University in the exhibition game on Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats beat the Ichabods 81-57.
Sophomore guard Jacob Pullen led all scorers with 21 points, including 4 for 5 from behind the 3 pt line.
"We wanted to come out and be aggressive," Pullen said. "During the second half we got into a groove offensively. We will be a good offensive team this year."
K-state finished the afternoon shooting 44.6 percent from the field, but Denis Clemente and Darren Kent were the only other two Wildcats to score in double digits.
"Everyone had first game jitters today," freshman forward Jamar Samuels said. "Thirty minutes before the game I couldn't believe I was about to play a game for K-State."
The first game jitters were noticeable on the court as well because the Wildcats had 15 turnovers in the first half and ended the game with 22 total team turnovers.
"The amount of turnovers we had today was ridiculous," head coach Frank Martin said. "We are still a very young team even though we are more prepared this year than we were last year."
K-State also struggled from the free throw line shooting only 58 percent.
A bright spot for the Wildcats was on the defensive side of the ball. They held Washburn to shooting 29 percent from the field and out rebounded the Ichabods 52-31.
"I was really pleased with our rebounding today," Martin said. "And I can't remember a time in a normal defensive situation where we got beat."
Washburn was led by DeAndre Eggins, who had 13 points, and 12 of the 13 Ichabod players that saw the floor scored at least one point.
K-State's first official regular season game is at 7 p.m. on Friday against Florida A&M in Bramlage Coliseum.
