Donations to Humane Society not what they seem

By Jessica Hensley

It started with a bottle of wine.

Last week, the U.S. arm of Australian wine company Yellow Tail created its "Tails for Tails" program, the aim of which was to aid in pet rescue. Through this program, Yellow Tail pledged to donate $100,000 to the Humane Society of the United States to help suffering puppies and kitties everywhere.

The result, however, has not been what the company wanted. There was an almost instant cry of outrage across the Internet, and Yellow Tail was inundated with angry e-mails. Facebook.com groups began popping up, demanding a national boycott. It would seem that, like many other well-meaning people across the United States, Yellow Tail had made a mistake.

The name, Humane Society of the United States, makes one think of animal shelters and pet rescues and people coming to the aid of abused and suffering animals. This is what inspires millions of Americans to donate their hard-earned money to the Humane Society, but, unfortunately, this is not the reality.

The reality is, the Humane Society is an extreme animal rights group, much like People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which calls for the end of all hunting, fishing, farming, pet ownership and the existence of domesticated animals. Wayne Pacelle, president of the society, said, "One generation and out. We have no problem with the extinction of domestic animals."

J.P. Goodwin, a Humane Society spokesman and former member of the known terrorist group Animal Liberation Front said, "My goal is the abolition of all animal agriculture."

No word on what he plans to eat.

Not only that, but the society doesn't actually run or contribute to any actual humane societies. According to its Web site, "The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is not affiliated with, nor is it a parent organization for, local humane societies, animal shelters or animal care and control agencies. The HSUS does not operate or have direct control over any animal shelter."

Does it sound like the society plans to save the puppies and kitties to you?

Of the more than $206 million in assets the Humane Society reported to the federal government last year, only $450,000 went to organizations that actually work with animals. The rest was spent on lobbying, salaries, fundraisers and producing those heart-wrenching commercials that prompt hard-working Americans to open their wallets.

The Humane Society is a fraud, as Yellow Tail has learned the hard way. And while the company still intends to honor its pledge, Yellow Tail has since announced the money has been earmarked for use in animal rescue only.

It is time that the Humane Society is exposed for what it is: an extremist group with an agenda and no interest in the welfare of domestic animals. We can all agree we must do the best we can by the animals that we care for. We can all agree animal abuse and exploitation should be prevented. But these goals are not the goals of the Humane Society, and the donations going to them would be better spent on your local animal shelter, where the money might do some good.

This is so wonderful, to finally have them(HSUS),exposed for the frauds they are. For ongoing info go to this link: Humane Watch.org. This will keep everyone informed about all the issues HSUS is involved in..at times it is sickening at the lies and just how much money the animal loving people of the world have contributed to this scam of an organization. They have used the "media frenzy, hysteria" for spreading propaganda... It has come to my attention that they(HSUS) have bought large shares in "Jack in the Box" and "Sonic" and yet they are supposedly non-profit. Follow the money trail. We need to spread the word quickly before more harm is done.

As Jessica Hensley points out, our organization is not affiliated with local humane societies, nor do we claim to be. Therefore it shouldn't be surprising that most of our budget is directed toward programs and campaigns addressing broader animal cruelty issues (puppy mills, dogfighting, factory farming, etc).

I'm glad several other readers referenced our website (www.humanesociety.org) because that's where anyone with questions can review our work firsthand and also see our annual reports and financial statements: humanesociety.org/about/overview/annual_reports_financial_statements.html . The HSUS has consistently received a four-star rating from Charity Navigator, an independent charity evaluator, and Worth also put us in the top ten most fiscally responsible charities.

By all means support your local shelters; they do important work. But recognize that helping animals isn't defined only by direct animal care. Look at our End Dogfighting program in cities like Chicago where at-risk kids learn new ways of relating to their pit bulls. Or our rewards in animal cruelty cases and wildlife poaching incidents. Or our collaboration with companies that are developing viable alternatives to animal testing. Or our animalsheltering.org website and its resources for shelters.

Yes we fundraise - and the people that attack us on are often fronts for agribusiness, which doesn't have to worry about fundraising since they receive taxpayer dollars to support their legions of lobbyists in DC. (Those tax payer dollars by the way, amount to more than the entire budget of HSUS).
We focus on treating all animals humanely, including farm animals For example, our organization has been a big proponent of cage-free eggs and we've worked to expand this market (I mean seriously, if Walmart, the world's leading price cut can switch to cage-free eggs, why can't everyone?
For anyone with questions about our factory farming campaign and our approach to this issue, check out Wayne Pacelle's interview on AgriTalk Radio from last June: bovinevetonline.com/directories.asp?pgID=678&ed_id=5203.

Those who are defending HSUS have failed to study the facts. The word is getting out now about what HSUS is all about. In just a few weeks HSUS will be the next "Acorn", just remember this, it won't take long.

Carrie, just so I can clarify. So stating that the primary purpose of HSUS is to perform lobbying activities (this is a quote from senior management of HSUS) is sloppy reporting but Katie Couric reporting grossly inaccurate information about the use of antibotics in animals is investigative journalism?

HSUS is being exposed only for the agenda it truly promotes. Why would any organization need to rely on advertising sad little puppies in front of animal shelters if their real cause was so noble that everyone would support it. Why not just be honest and say exactly what you are about. The reason is that they learned their lessons in the 80's and 90's that if they were exposed for ulimately being in favor of eliminating all animal agriculture e.g. J.P Goodwin or one generation and out e.g. Wayne Purcell that most Americans do no support their agenda, even though a very small part of it actually does appeal to many. When you promote a vegan lifestyle as a morally superior choice and ban all use of animal products in your offices, that has very little to do with cage free chicken production systems or improvement confinement facilities for pigs. That has everything to do with trying to eliminate animal agriculture as we know it.

Take some time to check out many of the comments on Yellow Tail and Pilot Travel Center facebook pages that outlines many abuses of HSUS including failure to file accurate tax returns, misleading advertising, video clips that are allowed to continue to be shown on their website stating "facts" that are directly contradicted by the Center of Disease Control. It doesn't take much research done independently to determine that the writer of this article just summarized what many of us have know for years.

Carrie, what do you know about farming? Chickens don't fly and rarely open their wings anyway. Keeping chickens from attacking one another in a blood lust is much more crucial to their well fare. If you have not farmed are trained in animal husbandry, there is much you will not understand.

Dawn, people today already KNOW that buying puppies from a pet store or internet site is buying from inhumane puppy producers. They do not need HSUS to tell them that. The HSUS is actually hoping to break the animal/human bond that many animals and humans enjoy and in that end they are exactly like PeTA. This is why they are lobbying to get laws passed that will lead to taking away all rights and relationships regarding our pets and livestock.

Wayne Pacell said it himself on Oprah, he has no bond with any animal. How can he even know what a pet could want or enjoy from a human? How can he understand our bond?

How can any TRUE animal right's advocate support an organization who supports Michael Vick? Isn't that an oxymoron?
The HSUS is a corrupt SHAM.

Unfortunately, as one who has worked with HSUS personnel in the past, i can tell you that their advertising is deceitful at best. I helped once or twice with their "EX" Senior Director of Emergency Services, Scotlund Haisley. I have watched them stage video, misrepresent fact on their website and to the media, and fail to adhere to the direction of local, state, and federal authorities. All in the name of the all important dollar. They are currently involved in lawsuits for violating one persons constitutional rights, slander, libel, and impersonating law enforcement (see Norman Chang in Hawaii on Google), a RICO lawsuit regarding mail and wire fraud among other charges relating to the recently dismissed suit against Ringling Brothers, and who knows what other lawsuits. This is because they will say anything, do anything, and commit anything for your dollars. After Michael Vick was busted (a scum they are endorsing by the way) they were begging for money to care for his dogs...until they were called out in the media that they had NOTHING to do with the care of those dogs. Then they quietly changed their plea for money to caring for dogs LIKE the Vick dogs. A very large and very profitable house of cards that Wayne Pacelle has built. Someday it is going to collapse and it will be a mighty crash indeed.

Well here are a couple facts to swallow. The most heinous dog killer in the USA is now working for HSUS: Michael Vick. And what "organization that claims to defend and protect dogs and puppies fought to have 4 week old pit bull puppies euthanized? Yup, HSUS.

I am glad to see more people finally researching the facts and truth about HSUS. This is an extremist organization that wants to prey on those that can simply watch a commercial of abandoned and mistreated dogs and cats and decide that this group will make a difference. Many posts have outlined the real level of support that HSUS contributes to these humane efforts - it is negligible. Their true and stated agenda is to eliminate animal agrigulture and companion animals. If anyone thinks otherwise, then they should do a little more research and see how much waste and self fulfillment they have. It's true that they are generating lots of cash from the clueless, but they know how tokeep their machine going - play another sad commercial and wait for the checks to roll in.

I am a bit concerned about the quality of education you are receiving if this is the level of work as a result.
Your so called facts are overly intertwined with your individual opinions which make for a very biased and radical representation of people and events. Although you have your groupies who cheer you on, you won't get very far in the 'real' world with this kind of extremism except perhaps Fox News where the video splicing and audio dubbing to alter the facts is an everyday occurrence. Perhaps this is your role model since your style of writing is not too far off. If you truly wanted to present a fair and balanced report you would done your research like the 'professionals' do and discovered so much more about what HSUS does than you reported but instead you chose the radical 'tea party' ala Glenn Beck approach.
So kudos to you, you've been indoctrinated into the right wing, made up reality of extremism!
Remember, everything you post on the internet will stay with you for a lifetime......

Ms Carrie,

Can you tell me how many shelters the HSUS gives free help???? None that I know off. Here in New Jersey I believe they charged 25,000 dollars for their advice to the State....HSUS and PETA do not increase adoptions and they fully recommend euthanasia. Ask PETA how many dogs and cats they put to death down in Norfolk in 2009 and I would have to be they are about half way there in 2010. This informantion can be attained in Richmond who has a problem every year with PETA getting the facts together and to them as required by law. Right now HSUS is doing the same thing with Haiti they did with Katrina...nothing, oopsss I'm sorry, they are reaping in donations to do nothing, excuse me. Ms Hensley did a fine job of reporting, I take it Ms Carrie the donations are starting to decrease to both HSUS & PETA as they are exposed.....

HSUS does give money in support to animal shelters...but only LESS THAN ONE HALF OF ONE PERCENT of its total budget—in grants to organizations providing hands-on care to dogs and cats. In 2008, HSUS reported spending:
-Around $20 million on “campaigns, legislation, and litigation"
-Over $86 million collected in contributions
-Spent more than $24 million on fundraising, including $4 million on professional fundraisers.
-$30.9 million in salaries, wages, and other employee compensation

This is a good quote from the Center of Consumer Freedom: "Think about it: 28 cents of every dollar contributed to HSUS goes back out the door to raise more money. HSUS even paid a single “lockbox” company more than $4.2 million to count and process its cash hauls." - www.consumerfreedom.org

HSUS is riding on the word, "humane" to deceive consumers that their money is going to save that cute puppy or kitty. Thank you, Ms. Hensley, for helping to define the disaster that HSUS is setting out to destroy for animal agriculture, and for informing students on what HSUS is REALLY doing with their money. Another great website is HumaneWatch.org.

The writer's perspective is right on target. There's no "sloppy reporting" here, as one anonymous source alleged. After much research on this subject, I can verify the accuracy of the information presented.
