NBAF germ lab

Christina Klein

Well, it’s official: The National Bio- and Agro-Defense Facility will be moving onto the K-State campus. Like many of you folks — especially those who are currently afflicted with hoof-and-mouth disease — I am excited.

Finally, a research facility that will cater to us rubes who can’t stop ingesting the feces of or copulating with our diseased livestock.

Seriously though, I am excited about NBAF — about the money it will bring to the Manhattan area as well as the potential for an extremely hazardous outbreak of highly toxic biological organisms.

Actually, “terrified” would be a better word than “excited” for that last one, but still, there’s a wave of adrenaline coursing through my body. For the past three nights, in fact, I have been lying in bed, wide-eyed, just imagining all the possibilities.

The mere thought of all those NBAF scientists bringing their huge pocketbooks to Manhattan-area businesses has me all giddy.

Just imagine, folks: By day these scientists will be handling rare, noxious diseases, and by night they will be eating at the local Dairy Queen.

One minute they will be handling the deadly Hendra virus, the next minute they will be buying a Barney and Friends lunchbox for their kids at K-Mart. Who cares about the recession now? We’ve got NBAF!

On the downside, should an accident or terrorist attack on the NBAF facility occur, the K-State campus will become like the tenth level of hell, with students and faculty running for their lives as a large toxic plume of airborne viruses enters the local atmosphere. After those in the vicinity breathe in these deadly toxins, they will most likely puke out their internal organs and bleed through their eyeballs.

Not that I’m trying to scare you. I’m sure that NBAF, when it comes to Manhattan, will be a great asset to K-State and to Kansas in general. There is no reason to panic. In fact, I am intrigued by the notion of possessing a third or fourth arm or a glow-in-the-dark head, just so long as it means getting some extra cash in the university, city and state coffers.

Money is the point, after all, and though Texas lawmakers have been fighting Kansas to wrest the NBAF research facility from its future home — even threatening legal action because of what they claim was an unfair selection process by the Department of Homeland Security — perhaps we can all take comfort in the fact that, after a long, tiring, and costly lawsuit, Kansas will probably prevail. Maybe. Probably. It will.

Then, in our triumph, and for many years to come, Kansans can bask in the pale blush of sunlight creeping through a dense mixture of smoke billowing from the new coal-fired power plants out west and green-tinted fumes emanating from the NBAF facility right here in our local community. The neon sunsets alone will be worth it.

Krista honey you need to do a little research yourself. The NBAF is an "AG" facility, the CDC is not nor any other BSL-4 level facility in major metropolitan area. The difference between the two are night and day thus the reason the GAO continues to maintain DHS cannot do FMD research on the mainland. I have worked in biotech for over 20 years and concur with the GAO findings. Furthermore, In the absence of actual plans for the NBAF, the NEPA process has been reduced to a purely hypothetical exercise and can provide no real-world guidance on safety. Further, the absence of design specifics means that the public cannot know how extensive the promised safety systems are, and cannot monitor whether those systems are cut or diminished due to budgetary constraints or overruns. Do your homework folks you are all being mislead.

How could anyone use the argument: "because it hasn't happen, it won't happen." Nuclear accidents have happened and their consequences have been devastating. Also, we already know that hazardous chemicals and toxic agents are being released into the environment all the time, as Mr. york alludes to with the power plant in western Kansas. Maybe York may be concerned that Manhattan is getting a raw deal. Thought it was funny.

Mr. York needs to do some research before he puts a pen to paper. There has never been a public exposure in the history of BSL-3 and BSL-4. And there are 5 out of 6 BSL-4 level facilities in major metropolitan areas such as Atlanta. The CDC researches things like smallpox and Ebola, both of which are worse than anything that the NBAF will be researching. Everything from that facility will be decontaminated either by chemical means or autoclaving. It will be negative pressure into the building. That facility will also have their own water and electrical supply. The probability of an outbreak is zero.

Hello friends. This is Abraham Lincoln. I just wanted to say that this Chance York is a total screw up. He is downright diabolical. I'd advise you to get rid of him right away! He is not funny, this guy. He's not smart...and...and...I hear he's Jewish!

Go Jets!

Chance York should burn in heck fire. He gives a bad name to a prestigious institution like Kansas State University. This is a sad sad column and a sad sad day. I cry tears of despair over this column. To think that this man has devalued the 8th largest circulation newspaper in the state of Kansas. This newspaper has a jumble AND a Soduku ladies and gentleman. Wow. I just can't speak right now.

Wow, I sure am glad that the A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications is churning out fine graduate students like Chance York.

See, that was my attempt at satire and sarcasm – somewhat better than his sad attempts.

This is literally the worst thing I have ever read in my entire life. Please never publish anything again. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Chance you forgot to mention another up-side for students and residents to the lab's coming. Since the NBAF will house an insectary, if any critters escape (ever tried keeping a winged critter in a jar with little airs holes) DHS will use their control action plan and spray the entire area with pesticide. So bonus, we won't have to use any more pesky Deep Woods OFF! to keep the mosquitos away. Sweet, Good times!

I bet this guy is a liberal who says he believes in God, but only in the abstract, referring to the good Lord only as "mathematical truth." What a creep. Terrible column. And he's ugly.

This has to be one of the worst articles I have seen in a long time. You didn't research, your poor attempt at satire was based in fear, and nothing was news worthy. I can only hope your major is janitorial science.

Disappointing and poorly written. Things sure have changed for the opinion page over the years. Guess anything gets published in the summer. Good job on the artwork though.
