The city has scheduled the first reading of a proposed ordinance that would allow alcoholic beverages to be sold on Sundays in Manhattan.

“It’s really a fairness issue,” said Mayor Bob Strawn. “It’s not fair to local establishments to give up the opportunity to sell alcohol on Sundays.”

Strawn said many local businesses are losing potential sales by the city banning the sale of alcohol on Sundays when several communities in the area do not.

He said he is open to the debate and looks forward to hearing from the community at the meeting.

According to the agenda, the city plans to approve $4.2 million in payments of claims, award contracts for wastewater plant repairs, intersection improvements and appoint members to the Manhattan Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.

The commission will also listen to a request of funds by Manhattan-Ogden USD 383 to improve the schools in the district by using the money approved by voters in November 2008.

The commission is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. in the commission room in City Hall, located at 1101 Poyntz Ave. The meeting will also be broadcast on local cable station Channel 3.

A copy of the agenda can be viewed on the city’s Web site, ci.manhattan.ks.us, under City Commission Agenda.
