Manhattan Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service and Celebration provides opportunities to students to serve their Manhattan Community. Located at the Manhattan Town Center Mall, volunteers can enjoy performances of gospel choirs, children's choirs, skits and individual performers from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lunch will be catered by Flint Hills Job Corps Culinary Arts Program.

Participating organizations are: Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Salvation Army, RSVP, Ogden Friendship House, Hope Ranch, Hand to Hand Program at Douglass Center, Manhattan Arts Center, Flint Hills Community Clinic, KSU Insect Zoo, Good Neighbor's Program, Sunflower CASA, St. Joseph's Village, Manhattan Public Library, Manhattan Emergency Shelter, Stoneybrook Retirement Community, Amanda Arnold Elementary, Agape Church, Connections Church and the K-State Student Union.

Sara Weber, AmeriCorps VISTA and assistant project coordinator of the volunteer center, said K-State Volunteer Center of Manhattan funded by student fees is a unique service to the community not just to K-State.

"I think it's a great opportunity to get students involved and I like the idea of helping out our community," said Cliff Burdick Sophomore in Business and minor in Leadership Studies.

Monica Strathman, special assistant for leadership studies, believes this day of service is particularly important in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.'s memory because it was his message to serve others. Twenty-two organizations are involved so students can volunteer for a variety of services such as, snow shoveling and helping take down holiday decorations. Sign up is on 8 a.m. Monday at the Town Center Mall to volunteer for the Manhattan community. For pre-registration availability for groups of six or more, e-mail userve@ksu.edu to sign up. Transportation is available for each location site. For more information contact: Sara Weber or Laura Cline at userve@ksu.edu.
