The Manhattan Parks and Recreation Department is currently in need of volunteer coaches for a variety of fall sports. Individuals with experience or a desire to coach soccer, cheerleading or volleyball are needed most.

“If you’re into sports and want to get involved, coaching is a great thing,” said Jeff Mayer, parks and recreation coordinator.

There are three different age groups requiring coaches: First and second grade, third and fourth grade and fifth and sixth grade. Practices begin on Monday and the regular season will start on Sept. 14 and run to the end of October.

Mayer said there is one game per week and the department requires one or more practices per week. Up to three coaches are allowed per team, so friends or family may coach together.

“You’ll get out of [coaching] what you put into it; if you come to have fun and teach the kids then you will have a great time doing it,” Mayer said.

There are also some paid positions available for those looking to earn some extra income. The department is hiring scorekeepers and referees for the games.

Interested people should contact the parks and recreation office at 785-587-2757. For further information regarding soccer, contact Jeff Mayer at mayer@ci.manhattan.ks.us or for cheerleading and volleyball contact Josh Maike at maike@ci.manhattan.ks.us.
