Skimpy Halloween costumes work against feminist ideas

“In the regular world, Halloween is when children dress up in costumes and beg for candy. In ‘Girl World,’ Halloween is the one night a year when a girl can dress like a total slut, and no other girls can say anything about it.”

Cady Heron may have been new to the “real world” in the movie “Mean Girls,” but that does not mean she made an inaccurate observation when it came to Halloween attire.

With Halloween coming up in just over a week, we can expect to see a sudden onslaught of scantily clad women walking around Manhattan. This fact brings up several questions, not the least of which is: “Why?”

According to an article in the New York Post, today’s culture said “it’s right to be slutty on Halloween.”

Girls see Halloween as a free pass to become a girl who could never “meet the parents” but could provide a wild ride of fun and excitement nonetheless. This attitude not only encourages an unfair double standard by deeming acceptable one night what would be considered “trashy” most other nights, but also prevents individuals from thinking creatively and coming up with their own unique costume ideas.

Halloween originally began as part of the religious holiday All Hallows or All Saints Day in the same way that Christmas Eve is a part of Christmas. People used it to prepare for the celebration of all who were good and holy, and would often dress up as their favorite saint, who was inevitably someone people wanted to imitate.

Times have changed, and the holiday is unquestionably secular in today’s world. However, many girls appear not to think through the message that their costumes convey to the world.

The onslaught of barely-there costumes indicates that many of the intelligent, involved, well-liked women of K-State and much of the world secretly desire to be nothing more than live sex toys. As proven by the bevy of feminist organizations, female CEOs and laws promoting gender equality, this is simply not an accurate portrayal of women today.

The most disheartening aspect of this costume trend is that it is continued not by chauvinist men but by women themselves. No one forces women to buy the same cliché “sexy costumes” year after year. Nevertheless, Halloween partygoers can count on seeing a plethora of referees, policewomen, playboy bunnies and devils roaming Manhattan next Friday night, all wearing costumes that contain more skin than fabric.

While the temptation to bare all this Halloween may be great, the women of K-State should consider doing something different this Halloween. Instead of flaunting shirts that barely cover the push-up bra separating a girl’s nipples from peeking out and surveying the world, think about a costume that shows some personality and is comfortable —and warm — instead.

I see. So you know what's best for other women, is that it? And this entitles you to set a standard that you can hold them to. This, in turn, means that if other women do not meet your standard, they are less feminist than you are, and are in fact cooperating with their own subjugation.

Funny thing that. See I'm almost certainly a bit older than you, but during my youth, feminism was celebrated for its ability to open doors for women. So how did we reach the point where feminists attempt to close certain doors while opening others? Seriously, to proclaim what is and is not appropriately feminist contradicts the spirit of feminism as a movement - a movement which ought to embrace any choice that an intelligent and emotionally together woman makes, being that it is her choice, and the genders as a whole is empowered by a variety of possible options, not be the choice of this option over that one.

Dressing sexy has nothing to do with Halloween. Halloween is suppose to be ghoulish NOT sexy! Where is fake blood, the scares, or fake guts hanging out? Where are the mummy wrappings, or bugs, or zombie looks? Where are the green wart faced witches? THAT is Halloween....Not sexy cop with tits almost hanging out. If you want to be a prostitute on halloween, at least throw some fake blood on the dress, and pale the face to look like a dead one......

Guess what: that's because IT'S NOT ''an accurate portrayal of women today'', because it's a little thing called a COSTUME, in a holiday where one of the main activities is dressing up and impersonating someone else/a persona/a character, whatever. How the hell does being sexy equals being a ''live sex toy''?! How is it feeling beautiful and desired ''anti-feminist''?! Who says a sexy woman can't be seen as inteligent, involved and well-liked?! The author is just perpetuating the stereotype of the ''hair-legged feminist'' and saying a woman's mind will only be apreciated if her body is unatractive!

BTW
ETHICAL STANDARDS HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH FEMINISM per se

ONLY A FOOL IN A GLOATING BLEATING ARROGANT ATTEMPT AT DISCREDITING SOME "GROUP"
WOULD VOW TO ATTEMPT TO ENGAGE IN SUCH RHETORIC...

I SUPPOSE THE WRITER FAR TOO COWARDICE TO ACTUALLY "GO AFTER FEMINISTS" per se...
THUS ATTEMPTS TO SUGGEST THAT IT IS ONLY THE "FEMISTS" THAT WOULD OPPOSE SEXUAL EXPLOITATION OF WOMEN IN GENERAL...

THOUGH THE CONSERVATIVE CHRISTIANS ALLEGIENCE IS TO THIS SAME THOUGHT.
SO MAYBE "you" CAN ASSIST THE OTHER GROUPS... TO PLEDGE TOGETHER TO HALT THIS DEBASING OF THE FEMALE POPULATION AND THE END OF THE CORRUPTION OF GOVERNMENT THAT EXPLOITS WOMEN AS WELL AS THE END OF THE MANUFACTURERS ATTEMPTING TO MARKET AND "sell" THE EXPLOITATION OF WOMEN... ! GOOD FOR YOU.

IT IS UNCONSCIABLE
FOR ANYONE
TO IMPOSE "SEXUAL" WHATEVER PUBLICLY... !

YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO INFRINGE ON OTHERS LIVES WHO DO NOT CARE TO "see" NOR BE EXPOSED TO SUCH TYPES OF PORNOGRAPHY!!! WHETHER IIT IS THE TYPE OF PORN OF A hetero COUPLE MAKING OUT AT A RESTAURANT, FOOTBALL GAME... IN ANY PUBLIC DOMAIN!!! WHETHER IT IS FROM THE TYPE OF PORN THAT IS THE EXAGGERATED AS IF "dress" IMPOSED ON FEMALES TO FURTHER EXPLOIT OTHER TYPES OF "sexual" DEMEANING AND ALSO EXHIBITIONS TO THE PUBLIC: IT IS CRIMINAL AND NO MATTER IF PRESENTLY IT IS NOT "ILLEGAL" AND ONLY UNETHICAL THE DAY WILL DAWN IT WILL BE WHOLLY ILLEGAL ALONG WITH NEVER TOLERATED.

Freedom, freedom, oh freedom of choice, where art thou? How hypocritical of a feminist to dictate what others should wear.

when a businessman is successful, maybe he goes out an gets a nice suit with his money. now he's a good businessman who is dressed well. lesser businessmen think, "hey, if i dress like that, maybe i'll be a better businessman." truth is, the clothes don't make the man. same thing with girls. confident women put on a sexy outfit to say, "yeah, i'm here. i know what i'm doing. if you think you have it in you, approach me. or maybe i'll approach you and see if you have it." then other girls see this and think, "i want that kind of confidence, maybe i just need to dress like that to get it." when in fact, the mentality comes first.

To all the people who commented negatively on this article, yeah, I agree, and I am sure the author of this article also agrees, that women should be able to do whatever they want, and that includes dressing "skimpy" on halloween. However, it is important to be realistic and acknowledge the societal factors that may have influenced a girl into feeling that showing a lot of skin on halloween would make her feel better about herself..

eye candy to whom? if she is doing it for some body in particular, that is her business. It is a deliberate attempt to engage some one or a group. I don't think the type of girl that does that cares what the "public opinion" is regarding her individual behavior. She only cares what the targets of her actions think in reaction to her.

Regardless of whether or not dressing like a slut is an anti-feminist action, the fact of the matter is that women who choose to dress this way on Halloween (or any other day for that matter) are asking to no longer be viewed as individuals, but that they want to be seen as objects. I can understand the desire to be desired, but wouldn't a girl rather be desired as a human being rather than eye candy?

When will feminists finally realize that their sexuality is the most powerful weapon that they have? Harness it but use it wisely ladies.

Stop trying to impose your standards on other people. IMO, saying "total slut" is more anti-feminist and damaging than what someone chooses (not) to wear. These statements are reinforcing the double standard of sexuality. If you only feel equal by putting on a pant suit, then I feel sorry for you. Some people like attention and being sexually desired, and some people don't. Neither way is better than the other, so who are you to judge.

it's one thing to dress like a "CEO of sex" - which would be the skimpy outfit - and to carry the mind that should go with it. that is, a mind that is in total control of the situation and knows what it wants and how to get it.

it is another thing to simply put on the outfit and expect the respect and shocked attention that is afforded to the "CEO of sex" person. I think when this person - the ditz or whatever - gets attention that is more akin to sexual harassment they expose themselves for what they are. Maybe they are a hedonist trying to cash in on an easy opportunity for physical contact or attention, or maybe they made a mistake, or maybe they are still learning how to pull it off.

There's all sorts of people out there I wouldn't try to pigeon hole anyone just because others have come before and failed. If you know what you are doing - do it. Most people can recognize and appreciate that.

Sexual liberation is not anti-feminist. And the notion that women are only empowered if they affirm masculine images - such as that of the CEO or politician - is a problematic one. Your theory of the desire for the slut-fest on Halloween is probably backwards.
