Grandview Plaza, Kan., Police found Fort Riley soldier Sgt. Detrain M. Runner, 26, dead in his Junction City home in the early morning hours of Friday, Nov. 20.

Police discovered the body of Runner, a petroleum sergeant assigned to Company A, 601st Aviation Support Battalion, following a call from an unidentified soldier.

Maj. Gen. Vincent K. Brooks, commander of the 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley extended his deep sympathy for the family and friends of Runner.

"The emotional fitness of our soldiers is a top priority, and in the wake of this tragedy we're working to ensure our community is doing everything we can to help soldiers and families cope," Brooks said.

Runner, from Monroe, La., played college football for Grambling State University prior to enlisting in the military.

The Grandview Police and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation are still investigating the incident.

Met Runner at choir practice in Iraq and he always lit up the room with smiles. I respected him for his leadership skills as well as the kindness in his heart. He was a good friend and after reading this I wish I had kept in contact. Rest in Peace.

Brother, thanks for the memories that you and I and the rest of the fellows enjoyed, I will truly niss you. I remember talking to you two weeks before the incident, just before I moved from 601st ASB and I will never forget that day. It was a few of us in the hall just laughing and having a good time. Take care brother and save some room for me when I get there. I will always remember you and thanks for everything. May God Bless you and your family.

We'll miss you Detrain. You were always a wonderful guy, & I never saw anything other than that. My heart goes out to his friends & family. The saying "Bad things happen to good people" is definitely true.

BTW...The Army is the last place anyone should go to for help. I was a Soldier for 5 years at Riley. They dope you up with pills & send you on your way. Not only that but if the couselor is also a Soldier, you cannot tell them a lot of things because they don't have a legit privacy act. You are definitely limited to what you can say to them. Go to the Irwin hospital & see for yourself.

I'm sorry I never got to meet Detrain but feel that I knew him through my grandson, Joshua Gomez who served with him in Iraq and Ft.Riley. Josh said he was a good man and a good soldier. My sympathies to his family and my heart-felt thanks to Sgt. Runner for his service to our Country.

Words can not express the pain that myself and everyone is feeling because of the loss of Detrain.....I still cant come to grips that he is gone, his personality couldnt be touched, always making people smile and laugh, and making the time go by. I only wish he were here to continue making the time go by. Detrain you will always be remembered man, and I pray that you watch over us and know I miss you. from your little big brother..

Detrain Runner. He was, is and always will be a good man. I feel honored having him as a part of the family. He was always cracking jokes and had a smile on his face. I remember when he first got on a motorcycle. He was like a kid in a candy store. He rode before dinner and rushed through dinner just to get back on the bike. Just the look of excitement on his face was exciting to watch. I really can't believe I am writing this about Detrain. I thought he would be in this world til the end of time. His burdened soul had now it lay to rest...is painful to all that knew him. God bless you Detrain. May you look down on us and and watch out for us. 1 Luv

I would like to respond to your comment, Just because they offer free services to these soldiers, does not mean that it helps. They have mental health right there at the hospital, but again that doesnt meant they are getting the help they need. i work at the hospital on ft riley trust me when i say that they dont always get the help they need. They come in and they tell them their problems and they give them some pills and send them on their way or they send them out to places for a few days. That is not going to resolve all the issues these soldiers go through.

I would like to note that unfortunatly mental wellbeing can be disrupted by service in the military, however there are many services available for free to military and veterans in the area. On campus for students, the office of Non-Traditional Student Services can refer military and veteran students to campus facilities if need be. The Manhattan Veterans Center also offers free services for active duty and veterans in the Manhattan area free of charge
