Fourum should be printed

Dear Editor,

As I realize you are attempting to reach your goal for the Collegian to be known as more than just another university newspaper and more an actual news source, I must warn you, what you are doing is killing a fan base. Students read other articles because the Fourum is there. Sure there are plenty of students that read the Fourum and toss the rest in the trash. However, for many, it is the hook that leads to looking at the rest of the paper. Due to the location of the Fourum, one can't help but see a few headlines that might be interesting.
Furthermore, it gives students the feel that it is "their" newspaper. It is an idea that originated here at K-State and due to its wild success, it is now a common point in nearly every newspaper in Kansas, university or otherwise. I'm aware that you may have other ideas that seem much better while brainstorming, but simplicity is often the best solution and it would be nearly impossible to simplify the Fourum. The more complicated you get, the less likely students will be to participate.

As for it being newsworthy, how can you post that it is not? What do students talk about? The Fourum. One could argue that Beth Mendenhall commanded more attention last semester, but that fad has passed and it was also orchestrated by what people said about her in the Fourum. The unique thing about the Fourum is that it is not a fad. It is shapes to the situation. Sure sometimes it is nothing but "Chaos" but not every article is a stroke of genius. We could say the same about many of your staff.

If you want to truly listen to students, as you claim to have done (and do not forget this is a STUDENT newspaper, faculty and Manhattan residents' opinions need not apply), then do not get rid of it. Students do not want to lose it, plain and simple.

As an alumni, the only reason I come back and visit the web page of the collegian is to read the fourum. Now you can forget it, and you can forget any donations! Where's your sense of humor? Where's the originality? LAME! Bring it back!

I'm saddened to hear The Fourum is gone. It would have been a much wiser decision to just be more selective about which comments end up in print. I sincerely hope The Fourum will return at some point in the future. It was one of my favorite things about The Collegian.

I will correct my own post before the supporters of Fourum lambast me for incorrect gramma ...

"...in general, the comments in the Fourum barely crossed the high school intelligence threshold level."

Thank goodness the Fourum is gone. It was childish at best. Sorry, Kansas State UNIVERSITY is not an extension of high school and in general the comments in the Fourum were barely crossed the high school intelligence level threshold. Good riddance. Glad to see there are some grown ups back in charge.

I'm certainly not saying that Curtis doesn't make a couple good points, but I'd like to clarify that the Collegian is a STUDENT newspaper because it is produced solely BY STUDENTS, not because it's produced solely FOR STUDENTS. Sorry, Curtis, but faculty and staff opinions do matter, and many Manhattan residents prefer the Collegian's news coverage over the Manhattan Mercury's.
1st ammendment...again

I am torn. I really love the fourum, it was my way of griping and getting a laugh. On the other hand, I think the only reason I considered the Fourum to be the best part of the Collegian was that I thought the rest of it was fit only for toilet paper. I'm willing to see how this goes. If the rest of the paper improves its content, I may be happy enough. Time will tell.

To add to Curt's letter: Advertisers are less likely to purchase space in your paper when there are less people reading the paper. No one picks up the Collegian to read about what to wear in the Spring or what the editor of the paper is thinking today. Also, I'm sure I'm not the only one to notice this whole Confessions idea is nearly the same thing already done by Collegehumor. In short, realize your idea is a failure.

I am also an alumni who comes back to the Collegian online to read the forum. It is a relaxing thing to do in my busy day. Now that it is gone I can't say that I will return to just read the articles that are probably posted in similar form in other places. I hope they realize the fun that was removed from the paper.

This seems like journalistic suicide. Removing the most popular feature in the paper (that hardly takes up any space mind you) and replacing it with some kind of tabloid/Post Secret "confessions?" I would pick up the paper for the Fourum, but read everything else. I'm skipping it from now on. Partially in protest, partially because I don't care anymore. Obviously, the new editors are not interested in printing a paper for the students.

As an alum, I won't be coming back to this website without the Fourum. Maybe I am immature, but it is what kept me coming back. Enjoyed reading things through the eyes of a college student. I enjoyed the fun of it. I think it is a shame.

Bring back the Fourum. It's the bomb diggity and you guys all know it. We will not stand idle as you attempt to bamboozle us.

Thank you, Curtis! Well said!

May I add - if the goal of the Collegian is to be a real news source, then there should be some real news in the Collegian (for once). The only 'real news' we get is the short World News section (much of which is just quirky news or extreme tragedies without detail), with the occasional opinion column on something important. I don't particularly care to know about the lives and backgrounds of our student athletes on campus; sure, interesting sometimes, but more important things are going on in the world.

This is not the first time a new editor of The Collegian has decided to get rid of the Fourum, and I am certain that it won't be the last.

I concur. The fourum was one of the best ways for students to voice their opinions on pretty much anything they wished.
