The Sigma Nu fraternity’s flag football team reigned as last year’s all-unversity champion.
In the fraternity league, which consists of roughly 20 teams, Sigma Nu’s team disposed of the competition to capture the title. Bart Eck, member of the flag football team and junior in construction science and management, said he intends to compete this year for another title.
“It was extremely difficult,” Eck said of last year’s playoff run. “There were three games that were won in last-second plays.”
The team consists of 12 players. Eck expects half of last year’s team to return and more to turn out for tryouts. The team practices about once a week while working around class schedules.
The playoffs are arranged in a single elimination bracket, fashioned after the NFL playoff system. Last year’s title was the first for Sigma Nu.
Another intramural sports team looking to defend its title this year is the Alpha Delta Pi sorority soccer team, which has reigned as champion for three straight years.
“We are really excited for this season to try to keep our streak going,” said Chelsy Coen, president of ADPi and senior in agricultural education.
The soccer team returns 10 players this year after losing a few seniors. However, they have a strong list of women interested in the team as well as some freshmen who are anxious to play.
Last year, the team had a close game against the Vet-Med Club – the same team that beat ADPi for the title four years ago – in the women’s championship game.
Coen said the team does not practice regularly, but players do arrive before each game to warm up and determine positions. With a healthy roster of returning and new students, the team aspires to be a serious contender for a fourth year in row.
The intramural flag football team kicks off the season on Sept. 9, and the soccer season begins on Sept. 10.
