Denis Clemente scored 20 of his game-high 24 points in the first half and the K-State men's basketball team (14-2, 1-1 Big 12 Conference) knocked off Texas A&M (12-4, 1-1) 88-65 Tuesday night in Bramlage Coliseum.
Clemente was one of four Wildcats to reach double figures. He was joined by Jamar Samuels, who scored 19 points, while Jacob Pullen and Dominique Sutton added 15 and 12 points, respectively.
Coming off just its second loss of the 2009-10 campaign, K-State returned to form, outmatching the Aggies on both ends of the court for the majority of the contest. The Wildcats opened the game on a 13-4 run and never trailed. Texas A&M narrowed the deficit to 20-16 midway through the first half, but that's as close as the Aggies would get. Clemente caught fire, connecting on five 3-point attempts before halftime, and K-State took a 45-33 lead into intermission.
Behind the hot shooting of Clemente and Samuels, K-State opened the second half on an 11-1 run to close the door on any chance of a Texas A&M comeback. With 15:58 remaining, the duo led the entire Texas A&M team 35-34. The Aggies never found an offensive rhythm – they shot just 29.6 percent after the break – and the Wildcats extended their lead to as many as 25.
K-State returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Boulder, Colo. for a matchup with the Colorado Buffaloes. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
