Quartet opens jazz series tonight

It’s time to jazz things up.

The Manhattan Arts Center will begin its Swing City Series with the Midtown Quartet at 8 tonight at the arts center.

The four-piece group from Kansas City, Mo., is a favorite at Houlihan’s Restaurant.

Tess Purvis, program and marketing director at the arts center, said the quartet performs mellow jazz.

“It’s really nice jazz,” she said. “It’s cocktail club jazz.”

Penny Senften, executive director of the arts center, said the quartet is a group new to the arts center series.

“It’s a group that we haven’t had before,” she said. “They’ll have a different show. It’s fun to have people in here who haven’t been here before.”

Purvis said the group plays original works but also will play pieces all jazz fans will recognize.

The group, which plays instrumental pieces, does not keep with one specific time period of jazz, Purvis said, which keeps the audience guessing.

“You go to jazz, and it’s new every time,” she said. “We’re proud of spreading it all out.”

For people who might consider attending, Purvis said everyone is welcome.

“Feel free to walk in at the last minute,” she said. “Jazz musicians don’t mind if you walk up and around. If you’re in your shorts and T-shirt, come in your shorts and T-shirts.”

Tickets are $13 for adults and $8 for students and can be purchased at the arts center box office.
