Parks and recreation department looks for volunteers to coach youth baseball, softball, T-ball

The Manhattan Parks and Recreation Department needs volunteer T-ball, baseball and softball coaches for the summer. Age groups for the teams will range from first grade to high school.

The city’s recreation coordinator, Jeff Mayer, said coaches will coach one or two games a week beginning in June. He said teams usually practice once a week, but coaches can decide their own team’s practice schedule.

Mayer said volunteers can sign up to coach a team in pairs or in groups to share the coaching duties for a team.

A coaches meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, with games scheduled to begin June 1.

Mayer said students who are interested in becoming coaches need to be in Manhattan through the summer because league play begins the first of June and runs through the end of July. Students interested in coaching should e-mail Mayer at by Tuesday.
