Three weeks after escaping from the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York, police captured the second escapee David Sweat on Sunday. Authorities previously encountered and shot to death Richard Matt near Malone, New York on Friday.

Sweat was shot while attempting to flee from a state trooper, leaving him with life threatening injuries.

According to reports, the two split up after the escape, with Matt taking residence in an abandoned trailer.

Police said Sweat and Matt originally planned to escape to Mexico.

In an odd coincidence of reporting, both the New York Post and New York Daily News featured identical headlines covering Sweat’s capture.

Sweat was on the run for a total of 23 days. More than 1,000 law enforcement officials were involved in locating him and Matt.
