Since its inception in 1997, National Walk to School Day has been encouraging students to (you guessed it) walk to school. The day was created, according to the Walk Bike to School website, in order to promote safe routes for children to get to school.

The event is now trending on Twitter, as many parents and participants are posting about their children’s journeys to school today. Others are posting reminders encouraging others to be conscious of the holiday revolved around safety.

Also, many businesses and people have made the decision to help with the kids walking to school and also to participate in the day, even in unique ways.

Other people are tweeting about it to remember their own walks to school. While some are comical, others are legitimately recalling how they used to walk to school every day.
