Fellow K-Staters,

Hope you are all having a great start to the week and over the late night celebrations from the Royals’ World Series win. Joe and I wanted to give you a quick update on some upcoming events and activities student government will be participating in.

This week, the Student Governing Association will host SGA Celebrates; a week-long series of events with the goal of increasing student awareness for everything that SGA does. From supporting campus organizations, to representing student interests when it comes to decisions made by the Kansas Board of Regents, your fellow students and peers play a crucial role in making sure your voices and concerns are heard and effecting real change. I would encourage you to attend the celebrations and learn more about how you can be a part of SGA and its activities.

As members of the K-State family, we take the issue of gun violence seriously. The K-State campus is currently exempt from allowing guns in university buildings unless expensive measures are taken to install adequate security on every campus building. These exemptions are scheduled to expire on July 1, 2017. We are currently in discussions with the Kansas Board of Regents and representatives from other schools in Kansas about how we would proceed if and when that happens. Doing what is right while respecting the rights of the individuals is a fine line to walk and we want to make sure we take the opinions, comments and concerns of all students into consideration before making any decision. To that end, we would like students to complete a short survey that will be sent out this Wednesday to let us know your thoughts on the matter. The survey will be completed by six colleges in Kansas, which will give us a comprehensive view of student opinions in the state.

Lastly, we hope to see all of you at Bill Snyder Family Stadium this Thursday supporting the Wildcats as they take on the Baylor Bears. We know coach Snyder and the team expect to win and your voice and support will play a big role in making that happen. Feel free to contact us with any comments, concerns or questions through Twitter at @StateSBP_SBVP or by email at sga@ksu.edu. We look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you and Go ‘Cats,

Andy Hurtig, student body president

Joe Tinker, student body vice president
