Transparency is not only good for democracy, it’s good for newspapers as well. That’s why I’m announcing that the Collegian will open its weekly budget meetings to the public starting Sunday, Jan. 24.
Unlike other budget meetings, a newspaper’s budget meeting is when the editorial board comes together to decide on content. It’s one of the most important meetings we have at the Collegian, and I believe it’s one that should be open to the public.
There are a number of reasons, but the most important is that is facilitates communication between the Collegian and the community we serve. Our process should not be an unknowable mystery. It should be open to all.
Open meetings also allow us to give students interested in journalism a firsthand look at how news gathering and organizing is done. From start to finish, they will be able to experience the complete conceptualization of a newspaper.
Starting Jan. 24, we will hold our open budget meeting inside the newsroom at Kedzie 116 every Sunday starting at 4:30 p.m. We hope to see you there.
