Kansas Senate approves Brownback appointments

The Kansas Senate approved Gov. Sam Brownback’s appointments of three new Board of Regents members and a new commerce secretary on Thursday.

The three new members of the board that oversees the state’s higher education system were appointed by Brownback in June, according to the Little Apple Post. They are Dennis Mullin of Manhattan, David Murfin of Wichita and Daniel Thomas of Mission Hills.

Mullin is chairman of a steel and pipe supply firm. Murfin is CEO of an oil drilling and equipment company. Thomas is a dentist.

Antonio Soave will be the new commerce secretary, though he has served as interim since December.

All four votes were 40-0, according to the Little Apple Post.

Drug bust, arrest on Ninth Street

The Riley County Police Department made an arrest after executing a search warrant on the 300 block of Ninth Street at about 10:40 p.m. on Thursday.

According to the Little Apple Post, officers seized approximately 2.8 pounds of marijuana, over $9,000, and other controlled substances including Xanax and LSD.

Brett Vaughan, 23, of 311 N. Ninth Street, was arrested for several offenses related to the distribution of illegal narcotic drugs, including intent to distribute both marijuana and controlled substances within 1000 feet of a school.

RCPD anticipates additional arrests to be made, according to the Little Apple Post.
