Former Stanford swimmer to be released early from jail

A former Stanford University swimmer who was convicted of sexual assault in March will only serve three months of a six-month sentence.

The San Jose Mercury News reported that Brock Turner is scheduled for early release today, due to a law that gives inmates credit for time served.

The prosecutors in the case recommended Turner serve six years in state prison, the Mercury News reported. But Judge Aaron Persky sentenced him to six months.

Officials anticipate protests.
