Student senate confirmed Kristen Schau, sophomore in political science, as the elections commissioner for the upcoming SGA Spring election cycle.
Schau was a senate intern in the 2017-2018 SGA term and is currently an at-large member of the governing body. Schau was approved to the position of elections commissioner without opposition.
Additionally, K-State Proud representatives Ethan Kallenberger, K-State Proud co-chair and junior in biochemistry and chemistry, and Julia Pechar, director of volunteers for K-State Proud and sophomore in kinesiology and nutrition, spoke to SGA about their philanthropy during open period.
“When you donate for a t-shirt, 100 percent of that donation goes to support Student Opportunity Awards fund which goes to help students in need,” Kallenberger said.
The SOAs, Kallenberger said, are scholarships that are solely need-based and sometimes mean the difference between the continuation of a student’s pursuit of higher education or their departure from Kansas State. Kallenberger said K-State Proud has kept more than 675 students on campus in their 13-year history.
Pechar and Kallenberger also announced the organization’s plan for furthered collaboration with SGA. In the past, Stephen Kucera, former student support director and recent K-State graduate, took the helm of the collaboration projects, Kallenberger said.
“We really want to try to use each others’ resources and just each others’ visions to try to make an impact for students on campus,” Kallenberger said.
With that goal of collaboration in mind, Kallenberger said K-State Proud representatives will host an SGA-specific volunteer training on Sept. 27 at 4:30 p.m. with particular emphasis on each branch of the governing body’s ability to spread awareness of Student Opportunity Awards.
Kallenberger and Pechar also announced that the logo for this year’s K-State Proud t-shirt campaign has been selected, specifying that the shirt will be purple. The winning design will be announced at the K-State Proud football game on Sept. 29.
SGA student senate will reconvene at 7 p.m. in the Wildcat Chambers on Thursday, Sept. 27.
