The Collegian Athletes of the Week for the final week of September represent the cross country and football teams.

Sophomore Cara Melgares placed fifth in the Rim Rock Collegiate Classic on Saturday at Rim Rock Farms. She was the top finisher for K-State with a time of 21:56.5.

After the meet, head coach Ryun Godfrey told K-State Sports that it was good to see Melgares finish in the top-10.

“Cara ran a little more aggressive to start, but it was good to see them work off each other and run a good race,” Godfrey said, also referring to senior Emma Wren.

The next meet for Melgares and the cross country team is the Bradley Pink Classic in Illinois on Oct. 12.

The male athlete of the week is senior defensive back Eli Walker. Despite K-State’s 19-14 loss to Texas on Saturday, Walker made 11 tackles, including one for a loss of 14 yards.

The defense kept the Wildcats in the game as they denied any points by Texas in the entire second half of the game.

Junior defensive tackle Jordan Mittie said he was proud of the way the Wildcat defense fought.

“We’ve definitely improved every game, so that’s exciting for us,” Mittie told K-State Sports. “One of our goals for the season is to get better every game. I would say that we’re playing with more confidence week by week, so that has helped a lot.”

The football team will take travel to play Baylor on Saturday in Waco, Texas.
