
The Kansas State Women’s basketball team squared off against Pittsburg State on Monday night for its second and final exhibition game of the 2018-19 season.
The Wildcats came out with a 65-50 win behind freshman guard Christianna Carr’s 27 points, and they extended their series lead over the Gorillas to 4-0.
First Quarter
Pitt State opened the game with a 7-0 run before sophomore guard Rachel Ranke hit a three for K-State. The Gorillas then weathered a six-minute scoring drought.
Carr hit a three-pointer to put the Wildcats ahead late in the first quarter.
At the end of the first quarter, K-State led the visitors 16-9.
Second Quarter
K-State dominated the second quarter with Carr sinking 12 out of 16 points scored by the Wildcats.
Pitt State went on another scoring drought, this time for four minutes. During that time, the Wildcat racked up eight points.
Carr finished the half with 17 points as she shot shot 50 percent (4-of-8) from behind the three-point line.
Junior forward Athena Alvarado led the Gorillas with six points, while freshman guard Kaylee DaMitz had six rebounds at the half.
The Wildcats ended the half leading Pitt State 32-16.
Third Quarter
Carr started the third quarter with her fifth three-pointer of the game.
The Wildcats got themselves in a bit of foul trouble early in the third quarter. Pitt State took advantage as it got into the double bonus with five minutes remaining.
DaMitz got into foul trouble herself and had to sit the remainder of the quarter with four fouls.
K-State would go on a three-minute scoring drought before sophomore guard Cymone Goodrich drove into the paint and made a layup.
Despite being outscored 15-14 in the third quarter, K-State led 46-31 heading into the final period.
Fourth Quarter
Pitt State pulled within 11 points of the Wildcats after opening the final quarter with two three-pointers from
two three-pointers to open the quarter by senior guard and forward Shelby Lopez and freshman guard Tristan Gegg. Carr combatted by adding to her point total with two quick layups and another three-pointer.
K-State separated itself by shooting four-of-five field goals before Pitt State called a timeout.
The Wildcats were able dribble out the clock to defeat the Gorillas 65-50.

Carr, who led the team in scoring, shot 10-of-20 overall and six-of-12 on three-point shots. Senior forward Kali Jones led the team with eight rebounds and three blocks, while junior forward Jasauen Beard poured in 11 points.
For Pitt State, Alvarado was the high scorer with 13 points, adding six rebounds. The five-foot-four DaMitz scored 12 points and had a near double-double as she hauled in nine rebounds.
After the game, she talked to the press about her 27-point performance in her second collegiate appearance.
“It feels awesome,” Carr told. “It’s awesome to be able to shoot the ball at a high-level tonight, and I hope I can continue to do that.”
The Wildcats will open the regular season next Monday against Omaha at 5:30 p.m. in Bramlage Coliseum, as part of a double-header with the men’s team.
