K-State cross country teams place 17th and 18th at NCAA Midwest Regionals

On Friday, the Kansas State cross country teams competed in the NCAA Midwest Regional in Peoria, Illinois where the men placed 17th and the women placed 18th.

Five individuals competed for the women’s team, placing 18th out of 34 teams with 487 points. This is the team’s best finish at the NCAA Midwest Regional meet since a 16th place rank in 2015.

Senior Emma Wren led the Wildcats with a time of 21:24.7 in the 6,000-meter race. This was a personal record for Wren to go along with her 35th place finish.

Sophomores Cara Melgares and Kassidy Johnson placed 66th and 80th, with respective times of 21:44.5 and 21:52.9.

Junior Anna Keeley finished 149th overall in 22:36.7 with freshman Cayli Hume following behind in 160th in 22:47.3.

The men’s team for K-State finished 17th overall with 502 points out of 31 teams. At last year’s meet, the Wildcats placed 10th overall, which was their best finish since 2004 at the NCAA Midwest Regionals.

“Both of our seniors ran a strong last race, they are both really hard workers and I couldn’t be prouder of them,” head coach Ryun Godfrey said to K-State Sports. “We had a lot of good performances today, and I thought we ended on a high note.”

Freshman Cooper Schroeder led K-State, finishing 68th overall in 32:25.8.

Senior Joe Gorthy finished with a time of 32:36.4 in 82nd.

Redshirt freshman Ethan Powell followed immediately in 83rd with a time of 32:37.6.

Redshirt freshman Dylan Brenneman finished in 120th in 33:18.3 followed by redshirt freshman Pierce Flanders (149th, 33:54.3) and freshman Charlie Parrish in 182nd with a time of 34:55.2.

The last meet on the fall schedule for K-State cross country will be the NCAA Championships on Nov. 17th at Thomas Zimmer Championship Course in Madison, Wisconsin. The first race is scheduled to start at 10:45 a.m.
