Five singles victories and two doubles victories highlighted the tennis team’s second day of competition in the Big 12/Pac-12 Dual in Arlington, Texas, on Tuesday. After kicking off the season with day one of the Big 12/Pac-12 Dual, the Wildcats upped their total combined victories in the competition to 13.

“Once again we had a complete team effort in all of our singles matches today,” head coach Jordan Smith said to K-State Athletics. “We picked up five wins and played tough in the other three. It was all in the mindset. Nothing needed to change from yesterday since they did a great job. Today was all about building on our fundamentals and continuing to be aggressive.”

Starting off the day with doubles play, not much changed from day one as the two duos that found victory on Monday also came away with victories on Tuesday. Freshman Manami Ukita and junior Ioana Gheorghita defeated Texas Tech’s Bojana Marinkov and Utah’s Madison McKay by a score of 6-3.

Juniors Karine-Marion Job and Maria Linares defeated the Texas Tech pair of Metka Komac and Olivia Peet, 6-1. With a strong start to their 2021 spring season, the pair have climbed into the Top 50 of doubles pairs in the nation at No. 46.

In singles play, junior Rosanna Maffei and senior Lilla Barzó both earned their second victories of the week, taking down opponents from the University of Kansas. Maffei took down Tiffany Lagarde in three sets, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3. Barzo made quick work of Julia Deming, defeating her by default with a score of 5-1.

Ukita backed up her doubles victory with a two-set victory over another Jayhawk, defeating Sonia Smagina, 7-6 and 6-3.

Junior Anna Turco and Gheorghita finished off the singles portion of the day for the Wildcats, defeating opponents from the University of Utah in two sets. Turco defeated McKay 6-1, 6-1, while Gheorghita dominated in her two sets with Emily Dush, sweeping her 6-0, 6-0.

With the seven victories on Tuesday, K-State finishes out the final day of the Big 12/Pac-12 Dual on Wednesday.
