Track and field
The track and field team will participate in this year’s Big 12 outdoor championship Friday through Sunday at Kansas State’s R.V Christian Track.
This year marks the third time the R.V Christian Track has hosted a Big 12 Championship, previously hosting in 2005 and 2012. This weekend is the first time since 2019 the Big 12 will host a conference tournament for track and field. The 2020 conference tournament was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The action will kick off Friday at 11 a.m. with combined events, then move into the field and running events to end the day. Saturday’s action will also start with combined events, then move into the field and running events, but with a 10 a.m. start time.
Sunday’s events won’t start until 1 p.m., with only field and running events taking place in the afternoon to wrap up the final day.
This weekend’s tournament will wrap up the season for the Wildcats who will look to make their way through a stacked field to capture a men’s and women’s title. A total of 14 of the 19 men’s and women’s teams in attendance will go into the weekend ranked in the top 40 in the latest USTFCCCA National Ratings Index, making it nearly impossible for any team to make it through the weekend easily.
Single-day tickets go on sale Monday at www.kstatesports.com/buytickets and are $10 for adults and $5 for youth. Tickets are also available on a walk-up basis each day of the tournament.
The baseball team travels to Lawrence to take on its in-state rival this weekend in the Sunflower Showdown against Kansas. The three-game series against the Jayhawks this weekend is the second-to-last series of conference play, with a home series against TCU coming next week.
The Wildcats were losers in its last series against Baylor, dropping two of three, including a 23-3 loss in the go-home game of the series. K-State gave up a 17-run fifth inning in that game.
The Bears dropped 43 runs on the Wildcats over four games, putting the spotlight on the pitching staff heading into this upcoming series.
The Jayhawks come into the Sunflower Showdown two conference wins behind the Wildcats and is currently in last place in the Big 12. K-State won six straight games leading up to the Baylor series and will look to the Jayhawks as a stepping stone to get themselves back on track before the year ends.
With only two road wins all year, a strong performance in Lawrence could greatly improve the team’s away record.
Hoglund Ballpark in Lawrence will play host to the weekend series, with Friday’s first pitch set for 6 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday’s games set to start at 2 p.m. Television coverage will be available on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ with radio coverage on KMAN.
The rowing team will participate in the Big 12 Championship this weekend at Decker Lake in Austin, Texas. This is the sixth competition of the year for the rowing team, most recently losing to Kansas in the Sunflower Showdown on May 1.
The entirety of the competition will be held Sunday and will not be held over multiple days.
Sunday’s action will start at 9 a.m. with a new conference champion crowned by the end of the day. Television coverage will be available on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ and results will be updated in real-time on the Big 12 website.
