Flight Crew Coffee Co. is a popular spot for students to relax and study in the heart of downtown. The shop has a plethora of menu options for every customer’s needs.

The inside of Flight Crew is cozy. Located at 423 Poyntz Ave., the shop is airplane-themed; clocks showing different time zones line the walls and the baristas wear stylish flight attendant attire.

According to its website, the shop’s mission statement is “to elevate the lives of all who walk through our door through uncommon kindness, extraordinary service and nostalgic class.” The owner, Heather Hnizdil, started the shop with the intention to mirror “the nostalgia of the golden age of flight.” The staff welcomes guests into the environment and prioritizes their experiences in a positive way.

Layla Hood, junior in park management and conservation and employee at Flight Crew, said her favorite thing about her job is the people.

“I really enjoy our relationships with the customers,” Hood said. “For a lot of people that visit, they are there daily, so we are on a first-name basis and talk all the time. It’s just one big family.”

Not only do interactions with customers feel personal, but the staff connect well with each other, too, creating a homey environment for customers to witness, Hood said.

“My favorite part about the job is getting to work with really cool people at one of my favorite places in town,” Hood said.

Flight Crew offers lots of flavorful menu options, and there is no upcharge for different kinds of milk for those with dietary restrictions. According to its website, Flight Crew doesn’t “believe in charging you to choose the milk you need. Alt milks. No charge.”

Flight Crew changes its menu based on the season. The most popular fall-themed beverage is the “Barista Drink of the Month,” a honey lavender-flavored latte.

The management adapts to staff’s student schedules. They also encourage customers to suggest different events and ways to grow their brand.

“The owner, Heather, is always asking for suggestions of what we can do for events, which I really appreciate because I always have ideas that she has been able to make happen,” Hood said.
